In a circular waste economy, the goal is to design out waste and keep resources in use for as long as possible. By reducing, reusing, and recycling, we can prevent valuable materials from ending up in landfill and instead keep them circulating within the system.
Every waste stream, from paper and plastics to food scraps and coffee grounds, plays a vital role. When we treat all waste as a resource with potential, we not only reduce landfill and lower greenhouse gas emissions but also lessen our reliance on raw materials and build more sustainable, resilient communities that benefit both people and the planet.
As part of our building’s commitment to sustainability and supporting circular practices, we’re excited to introduce Reground; an additional service being rolled out through our cleaning contractor, making it easy for tenancies to participate.
Reground is a Melbourne-based social enterprise that collects used coffee grounds and diverts them from landfill. Instead of producing harmful methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than CO₂, your coffee waste will be transformed into a rich soil enhancer for community gardens, local farms, and home growers.
This shows how reducing waste is about more than using less; it’s about making smarter choices every step of the way. From avoiding landfill and minimising waste generation to repairing the cycle by giving materials a second life, reminding us that reducing and reusing comes in many forms, not only by cutting down on waste, but finding ways to extend the life of what we already have by making a big difference form the simplest of habits.
Why every waste stream matters:
• Landfill contributes significantly to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions
• Organics like coffee grounds release methane, a gas 25x more harmful than CO₂
• Each stream diverted from landfill helps build a stronger, circular system that reduces environmental impact
Why coffee counts:
• 1kg of coffee grounds = 2.1kg CO₂ emissions avoided
• Creates a positive use for something many of us generate daily
• Supports urban agriculture and community resilience
Why it matters:
•Organic waste in landfill creates methane, accelerating climate change
• Diverting just 1kg of coffee grounds = 2.1kg CO₂ emissions saved
• Supports local food systems and reduces waste in a meaningful way
• It’s an easy, impactful step toward a more circular and sustainable system.
This initiative makes it easy for your team to be part of a positive environmental impact, simply by disposing of coffee waste in the right stream. This helps us turn everyday waste into a valuable resource.
Together, we can give your daily coffee a second life and help the planet to build a cleaner and greener future while we’re at it; simply starting by your morning brew.
